NE’s Largest Sr. Living Provider Acquires Ridgefield Community

May 6, 2003 Great Pond Crossings, an independent and assisted living community in Ridgefield, CT, has been acquired by Benchmark Assisted Living, the largest senior living provider in the Northeast. With the transition, the community will receive a new name, Ridgefield Crossings. It will also receive a new focus for its services, becoming an assisted living and memory impairment care community. The community is located at 640 Danbury Rd. in Ridgefield.

“We’re very excited about entering Ridgefield and the Fairfield County region,” said Thomas H. Grape, founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Benchmark Assisted Living. “This area has the right population density and it has a very good infrastructure of professionals and services for us to work with.”

Benchmark Assisted Living, headquartered in Wellesley Hills, Massachusetts, brings strong credentials to Ridgefield. The company already operates three senior communities in Connecticut, in Mystic, Newington and Niantic, and 29 overall in the Northeast. This past year, Benchmark expanded into New York by acquiring five senior living communities upstate.

Benchmark’s leaders serve significant roles in the assisted living industry. Mr. Grape is the chairman of the Assisted Living Federation of America, which represents more than 7,000 senior living and service providers across the U.S. In addition, Mr. Grape helped found the Massachusetts Assisted Living Association chapter.

“We’re very pleased to bring our personalized senior living services along with our excellent track record of financial soundness and stability to Ridgefield,” Grape said.
The Ridgefield community currently offers 123 independent and assisted living apartments. Benchmark plans to redesign the care program and renovate the building to provide 99 assisted living apartments and 24 apartments for residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other memory impairment.

Alzheimer’s and memory impairment care will be known as The Harbor Program. The apartments, which are offered on a rental basis, come with an array of amenities and services, including dining, transportation, recreational and social opportunities, personalized service plans and more.

In addition, Benchmark will provide the community with its hallmark personalized approach to service, which emphasizes individual privacy and respect.

“You will never see a medication cart being pushed down the hall at our communities,” Grape said. “And you will never see a resident being given medicine in front of other people during a meal. If residents need medications, the medicines are given to them privately. Think about it – how many of us would choose to take medicine in front of other people? Why should the right to dignity and privacy disappear as we get older? It’s our philosophy that this right doesn’t change, and everything we do is founded on our belief in personal dignity, respect and attention to individual needs.”
